ABOUT

Necromancy formed around 1997 in Pretoria out of the remains of Mass Hysteria.  The initial idea was for Johan Mocke and Ryan Kriste to play together again as we had been rehearsing together for years.  Jacques Valentyn was the obvious talent in the band and Ryan from work, who we had jammed with before, would be on drums.

We were heavily influenced by Guillotine from the USA and the first song we jammed together was a cover of their track Tormentor.  We wanted to play fast thrashy Metal somewhere between Kreator & Darkthrone.  I had been offered a deal to press and release a CD by the German label Barbarians Wrath purely on the strength of this plan.

We rehearsed in the Berea Park club hall in Pretoria and started writing original material, notably the track ‘Peine Forte et Dure’, written by Johan with music by Jacques.  As writing progressed it became clear that the band was evolving in a more technical thrash route, as this was Jacques favourite music.  The two Ryan’s couldn’t keep up with this and were replaced by Stefan Steyn and Riaan Coertze.  This line-up played many successful gigs before adding keyboards and changing their name to Mjöllnir.

Mjöllnir would record a two song demo and were featured on the first New Breed CD.
